Laura’s Guide to Stop Being Scared and Start Something New

Hello Friends,

Starting something new can be super scary. You may fear how it looks to others, that others will judge you or that you could fail. I know I was really nervous about creating my blog, but I did it, and I am here to help you get past that initial fear, too!
Today, I will share my 5-step plan for starting something new, which I modeled after the start of my blog!

Step 1: Forget About Everyone Else – When you are thinking about starting something new, it is expected to worry about what others may think, but this can hold you back from going for and doing what you really want. So, the first step to starting something new is forgetting about everyone else and focusing on yourself. Will doing this be fun, bring you joy, or have some other positive effect on you? Then do it! Focus on the positive impacts this thing will have on you rather than what others may or may not think because of it.

Step 2: Put it on Paper – Write precisely what you want to do. Write down your goals for starting this and the steps you can take toward reaching these goals. Using my blog as an example, I would write, “I want to start a blog to help others learn about and better navigate their mental health. I can do this by…”. Putting something on paper can help you make better sense of it and plan more productively. This is also a great time to take to the internet and learn more about what you want to start. You can even take some notes!

Step 3: Get the Necessary Supplies – Now, you must collect the supplies necessary to start what you want to start. If you want to start golfing, you are not going to get very far without a set of clubs and a ball, so now is the time to acquire all that you will need to begin. If you want to take up knitting, this would look like getting a set of knitting needles and some yarn. For my blog, this meant purchasing my website. There is no need to go for anything top-of-the-line. Borrow from a friend, or consider thrifting for some of your supplies.

Step 4: Jump in With Both Feet—Now that you have forgotten about what others may think, put your goals/plan onto paper, done a bit of research, and acquired your supplies, it is time to take the leap. Go for it and begin learning. Really commit to the process and to learning. It may be hard, and you may even fail at first, but that is all part of the process of becoming great.

Step 5: Stick with it—Don’t give up when it gets hard, or you can’t quite get that intricate stitch or shot you are working on yet! You will get it eventually; you just need to keep working. Stay open to learning, and remember to have fun along the way!

Laura, you are letting people know that mental health is important, real and needs to be talked about! Your truth in your first posts stirred up many emotions and thoughts and made me more determined to listen to others and really hear what they are saying, especially when struggling with their mental health, to continue to support others and continue to learn about mental illnesses and health. I hope everyone reads what you have to say because you will help so many by “putting yourself out there” and letting people know they are not alone.
