How to Know if You are Experiencing Holiday Burnout

With the craziness of the holidays, it is more common to be burnt out than you may think. Yes, most people are off work for at least a couple of days over the holidays, but often, those days are packed full of holiday celebrations and tasks, leading to holiday burnout. If you are questioning whether you may be experiencing holiday burnout, here are some common signs of it. 

Physical Signs of Holiday Burnout

  1. Headaches and/or Muscle Tension: Muscle tension that persists specifically in the neck, shoulders and head. 
  2. Troubles with Sleep: Troubles falling asleep, staying asleep or not feeling rested no matter how much you sleep
  3. Changes in Digestion or Appetite: Stomach discomfort due to stress and increase or loss of appetite 
  4. Fatigue: Feeling more tired than usual even if you are getting enough sleep.

Emotional Signs of Holiday Burnout

  1. Anxiety: Worrying constantly about not getting things done or disappointing people. 
  2. Loss of Joy: Feeling a lack of joy in festive activities that usually would bring you joy.
  3. Irritability: Getting upset more easily. Possibly snapping at loved ones. 
  4. Mood Swings: Changes in mood that happen quickly and frequently. 

Behavioural Signs of Holiday Burnout

  1. Withdrawal: Isolating from celebrations and loved ones. Possibly declining invitations and not answering texts.
  2. Procrastination: Putting off holiday responsibilities such as gift wrapping or cooking to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  3. Reduced Productivity: Struggling to get things done or taking much longer to do something than usual.
  4. Avoidance: Avoiding social events and holiday responsibilities.
