Give Yourself Credit Even When You Feel Like You Have Done Nothing

I have been feeling overwhelmed recently, so in my free time, I try to plan everything I have to do. I end up starting tasks and getting distracted by others, making my “free time” feel unproductive and leaving me further behind than when I started.

Maybe it is a way of subconsciously procrastinating or keeping myself stuck? I am unsure. Nonetheless, I am very hard on myself about it. Lately, it has reached the point where I can no longer enjoy my little hobbies, such as journaling, baking, or even watching a show, because I feel like I need to use my time more productively. My mind is constantly racing with all the things I need to do, but I can’t slow it down long enough to actually accomplish anything.

At the end of my day, I often feel as though I have accomplished nothing, or worse, that I am further behind. This feeling is tough to accept, especially as a perfectionist.

Today has not been my best, but I am still showing up. That’s what matters. I am working on being okay with showing up imperfectly—even if I’m late, tired, sad, unmotivated, or overwhelmed. A big part of that is giving myself credit for what I can do, even if it’s not perfect.

If you’re ending your day wondering, “What did I even do today?” you’re likely only focusing on what’s visible or checklist items. But there’s valuable, unmeasured work we accomplish each day.

I know I’m not the only one whose biggest critic lives in their head, I wanted to share something that might help. If you’re going through something similar, here’s a list of things you likely did today that you should give yourself credit for:

  • Managing your emotions
  • Reacting differently/handling something better than an old version of you would
  • Answering a text message
  • Remembering to eat
  • Showing up even when you didn’t feel like it or want to
  • Getting through an anxious moment

Existing and surviving while overwhelmed, stressed, or burnt out is no simple feat. You are doing better than you realize. I see your effort, and one day you will be grateful you kept going. Show yourself some grace in the process!

Until next week, my friends! Make sure you Subscribe!

P.S. I’m proud of you 😉
