Hello Friends,
Depression can be extra challenging to cope with during the holidays. To help those who are struggling feel seen and to raise awareness for the effects of mental illness during the holidays this post will highlight some struggles people with depression may face over the holiday season.
Increased Pressure to Feel Happy: The holidays are often referred to as the most wonderful, joyful time of the year. However this is not the case for everyone. Those who struggle with depression often still experience low mood even during the holidays. However people still expect them to be joyful during the holiday season.
Feeling Like a Burden: The fact that people with depression struggle to experience the joy of the holiday season can make them feel like a burden. No one wants to be a downer but often those with depression can be made to feel that way during the holidays. This can cause them to be extra hard on themselves.
Difficulty Enjoying Festivities: A common symptom of depression is loss of interest or joy in doing things you used to love. This can be especially prominent during the holidays. Depression can cause you to lose interest in favourite traditions or no longer find joy in them which is hard.
Feelings of Loneliness: The holidays can heighten feelings of loneliness. Especially for those who don’t have very strong support systems or who are grieving. Spending the holidays without loved ones can make this time of year extra difficult.
